Today the Consulate General of the Netherlands in St. Petersburg and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Russia hosted a joint event dedicated to International Women’ Day. Female leadership in times of Covid-19 became the topic of today’s meeting.
Показать полностью. The organisers aimed at celebrating the social, economic and cultural achievements of women in Russia and have invited three female speakers from Shell in Russia, Gonzo Design and NGO «Silver Age» to share their stories and experience and highlight the changes that their companies have faced with during the pandemic.
The audience was welcomed by H.E. Gilles Beschoor Plug, the Dutch Ambassador to Russia. This event became one of the first public meetings for the Ambassador after his designation.
Among other things, Ekaterina Grushetskaya, the Vice President of Shell in Russia, shared her story of a woman building up her career in a large corporation and described how Shell responded to the challenges during COVID-19. Yulia Maltseva, the CEO of the «Silver Age», told about the group of «Silver Volunteers» that consists of women aged 55+. «Silver Volunteers» participated in numerous events starting from the Kazan Universiade back in 2013 to the Olympics 2014 in Sochi and many more. Ksenia Diodorova from Gonzo Design elaborated on what visual anthropology is and told about women’s role in the world of design during the pandemic.
More than 80 people attended the e-meeting, including the NL alumni, and we thank the Embassy and the Consulate for organising the meeting.
What is an alumni network and how can I benefit from one?
They may not know it but anyone who has ever studied anywhere is an alum. You don’t even have to have graduated; if you’ve studied somewhere at one time, then you are an alum of that institution.
As soon as more than one alum get together, they become alumni (that’s the plural form), and the more alumni you have the wider your alumni network becomes.
What’s an alumni network?
Every educational institution has an alumni network, formal or not, and they’re used for a wide range of things. Alumni can build business connections, organize reunions, and serve as shining examples of the kind of people that their institution produces. It’s very useful for those who are genuinely interested in the lives of their old classmates and like to see what they’re up to.
How can I get involved?
Typically, these groups are headed up by an alumni coordinator. This is someone who’s there to help set up cool networking events, bring students together, and create a space where everyone can stay connected and made aware of what’s going on with former peers. It’s a complex job that involves working hard to connect people.
Look out for their emails asking you to update contact details and if there’s an alumni newsletter, sign up for it. You can also connect over LinkedIn and join any other official alumni groups that exist across social media. Reaching out via email and simply engaging with your fellow alums is also a great step, as the community can only be effective if its members engage with each other!
How can I benefit?
School can be expensive and we all know it’s hard work. People may not realize it, but education is so much more than just the qualifications you receive at the end. It’s about the lessons you learn, the people you meet, and the relationships you build. So why would you expect to leave all of that behind after graduation?
Alumni networks provide the long-term value to an educational institution by giving alumni the chance to stay in contact and continue to learn from each other long after they have left school.
Support networks are hard to come by out there in the world and having a ready-made one full of people with shared experiences just waiting to connect is a luxury that few can afford to turn down. When you can, join your school’s alumni network.

Alumni Share Their Favorite BCG Memories
My favorite BCG memory was when we commemorated the 20th anniversary of my associate class with a reunion in the Boston office. Our BCG experience was truly a transformational one for us all and getting together was a highlight of my year.
— Former Principal BCG
BOS (2005-2010)
My best BCG memory was building a business plan for a non-profit organization supporting COVID-19 initiatives where I was really able to see the difference we were making in the world.
— Former Consultant BCG
DET (2018-2020)
My favorite BCG memory is the camaraderie of the office, which is second to none. The friendships made and knowledge gained whilst working in the Auckland office will forever be with me.
— Former Assistant BCG
AUC (2007)
My favorite BCG memory is visiting the San Francisco office for alumni panels and happy hours. Even though I never worked out of this office, I still feel really close to BCG.
— Former Consultant BCG
SAO (2008-2013)
My best BCG memories are probably the late dinners we used to share once long and hard cases had been dealt with, bringing us together with the satisfaction of accomplished work.
— Former Senior Associate BCG
PAR (2012-2014)
My favorite BCG memory was shooting a video for a global meeting with my team. I had never expected to dance at the office.
— Former Knowledge Assistant BCG
TOK (2016-2017)
My best BCG memories are all related to people: My cohort, my mentors, my teams, and everyone who worked in the offices where I have hung my hat over the years, who were always willing to help one another. To me this is what BCG is all about and what has made BCG a home for many years.
— Former Project Leader BCG
MUN (2008-2017)
My best memories of BCG are of engaging with my colleagues on Fridays back at the Dallas office, sharing case experiences, playing foosball and learning something new every day.
